Jewish History Nerds

Jewish History Nerds
Yael Steiner and Jonathan Schwab take turns leading each other through obscure and fascinating corners of Jewish history, and the result is one of the most enjoyable Jewish podcasts out there. Now in its sixth season with 59 episodes, Jewish History Nerds is produced by Unpacked (OpenDor Media) and carries a 4.7-star rating from 220 listeners. Each episode runs 40 to 50 minutes and covers a single topic -- medieval Jewish pietism one week, a Cold War espionage case the next, the history of the Haggadah the week after that. The format works because Steiner and Schwab genuinely surprise each other. The one who did the research presents it, while the other reacts in real time with questions and jokes. It feels like eavesdropping on two friends who happen to be really good at research. They do not talk down to their audience, but they also do not assume you already know the material. A listener with zero background in Jewish history could follow along comfortably, while someone with a PhD would still learn something new. The humor is natural and unforced -- they laugh at their own tangents and call each other out when a story gets too wild. Recent episodes have covered everything from Jewish pirates to the origins of specific liturgical poems. The show also has a YouTube version with video, if you prefer watching their reactions. If you love history but want it served with personality and genuine chemistry between the hosts, this is a reliable weekly pick.
